Industrial Hearing

INDUSTRIAL TESTING AND NOISE RELATED HEARING LOSS

Noise induced hearing loss is the most common cause of permanent sensory neural hearing loss, other than Presbyacusis. Sounds / noise in an industrial setting are seen as harmful when the intensity level is above 85dB.  Harmful sounds are determined by their volume/ intensity, duration and pitch. The duration of exposure of the worker depends on the intensity level, the louder the noise the shorter the exposure time.  The wearing of suitable hearing protection is compulsory for workers working in noise levels above 85dB.

Occupational Health and Safety Act stipulates that the employer is responsible for monitoring the hearing sensitivity of workers.  If the worker’s hearing sensitivity has deteriorated or if the percentage hearing loss is above a certain point, a full diagnostic hearing evaluation is required.  Industrial noise testing is a specialized field of interest and should only be done by specialized audiologists. Depending on the test results, the audiologist will then consider if further referral to an ENT-Specialist is necessary.

Our team (consisting of an ENT-Specialist and audiologist) will be able to assist the industrial patient through the whole process of monitoring the hearing sensitivity.  Joint report writing is another benefit of our team approach.  Should the patient need further rehabilitative assistance or surgical intervention the patient will be followed up by our team and helped through his medical aid.
